From The Road, To The Road To Recovery
I’m a traveler. The last few years of my life have been filled with new experiences and adventures year round, especially once the snow starts to fall. In the winter I’m always on the road; traveling to competitions and ski events, chasing storms, or just heading to different places to meet up with friends. Even when the driving stops and I’ve reached my destination, my days are filled with tours in the backcountry, non-stop days of skiing at the resort, and recently epic speed riding flights. Then WHACK, and my whole life came to a stand still.

Dropping into "The Key Hole" at the Alpine Meadows comp
With 1300miles added to my odometer, I sighed with relief as I turned my car off, and another ski road trip was complete. I had just competed in Alpine Meadows, California at one of the Tough Guy Productions’ Big Mountain Telemark Series stops. The comp went well; I placed 7th, and it was great to see all all my friends and fellow competitors. I came home to a fresh vail of new snow and I was excited finally to be back in Sun Valley for longer than a week! I was having a blast skiing in the “The Burn” (the fire scorched backside of Baldy) with my friend Miles Fink-Debray. Miles is an alpine racer, and we hardly ever see each other due to conflicting travel schedueles, so it was great to actually ski together. We had been charging and had gotten five, amazing, untracked Pow-laps in. With our sixth lap almost complete, we were almost back in the resort in a section called “Windows.” Like the name implies, there are natural open areas in the glades which allow for skiing fast and not having to worry about dodging trees. My hoot-n-hollerin’ turned to yells of pain after a WHACK. I slammed my shin into a tree stump that was hidden under the new snow, like a racer would shin a slalom gate. I was in so much pain that vision was going black and tunneling. After managing to get down and into the doctor I was relieved to learn how lucky I was. I had dislocated my knee, but everything else was somehow intact! Considering that I should have broken my leg, and I should have torn all the ligaments in my knee, I am thankful to have a relatively minor injury. With the help of Dr. Stephan Siele, at Ascension Holistic Health Center, I’m already off crutches and walking around semi-normally!
This injury has given me a timeout and a chance to slow down for a change. I cannot remember the last time I had to just chill and lay low for a month. I’m hoping my physical therapy allows me to get back on skis before the end of the season, and I’m healing really fast, so send good vibes my way! Also, I might be able to work with Sun Valley Adaptive sports and have a chance to try out a sit-ski, so I’ll at least be able to get on snow again this season even if my leg isn’t quite ready!
Day Tour: Titus Lake Area
Yesterday, I went on an amazing day tour with my friend and rippin-tele-chick Simone Kastner. We were greeted with a blue bird day and warm sun as we started our hike out Titus Ridge from the top of Galena Summit. With no new snow in the last few weeks, the a hike out was on hard, wind scoured, snow. However, a few hundred vert below the ridges, we were surprised to find some really good skiing. After a two-ish hour hike out, we skied a fun alpine style line to start things off. Then we hiked back up to find one of the last remaining pillow lines in the area! Our second descent lead us into the flats, but a short double pole through the plains put us right back at Road. After getting shut down for 40min we were finally able to hitch a ride back to the top of Galena Summit. It was a great day, and I can’t wait to get out there again!

It was a cloudy day so instead of jumping into flat light, I worked on my hand drag 360′s off the knuckles…
Tour In The Dagobah System
For my last day in Revelstoke, I went touring in Rogers’ Pass with my friends; Jake Sakson, Mark Welgos, and Lange Adams. The day started at 6:00am with a drive up the pass and a mission to ski in a secret pillow zone that Jake called “The Dagobah System.” After admiring the morning alpin-glow on the surrounding mountains at the trail head, we started our four hour trek up the mountainside through a beautiful glade. With lots of kick-turns, some creative route finding, and practicing our skin-astics over fallen logs and through tight trees, we made it to the ridge and headed up to just above tree level. With well below freezing temps we geared up quickly headed down for one of the most fun runs I’ve ever skied. Check out my GoPro video and the days photo gallery below:

FWT Revelstoke Update: Men Day One
The Level of Competition on the men’s side of things was amazing. The new snow made sure that big drops, spins, flips and stomped landings were a common occurrence today. Drew Tabke, Lars Chickering-Ayers, Mat Jackson, Spencer Brinson, Griffin Post, skied the top five mens runs.
The Sun Valley athletes all skied some big gnarly lines and placed well within the field. North Parker flashed a steep big line and sent a big air into 8th. Drew Stoecklein and Griffin Post skied similar lines off a huge triple staged cliff drop. Griffin stomped his landing putting him in 5th, while a little backslap left Drew in 16th. Axel Peterson skied a super fun line but over-rotated on his 360 while sending it over a 30-40ft drop, causing him to crash and score low in the control category. Axel ended up in 39th after his crash. Collin Collins was the last competitor to ski today, and after sitting in the cold wind up at the top he threw down one of the most stylie runs of the day. Collin threw a huge 720 over a 40-50drop which boosted his score in the style category leaving him in 15th place.
Collin Collins’ 720 was sicker than H1N1″ — Judge Dash Longe

Tomorrow, the top 20 Men and 7 Women from today, will jump in the heli to compete in the finals on Mackenzie Face! Be sure to tune back in to the FWT live webcast at 10am PST.
From Sandals To Ski Boots
Still in my board shorts after a long day of surfing in Hanalei Bay, Kauai, I hopped on the red eye headed back to my home base in Sun Valley, Idaho. Ready for more summer, I walked out of the Boise airport, and I was greeted outside by cold that cut straight to the bone. A shock to the system for sure, but it got me stoked on the season. I was back home for 48hrs which gave me time to say “hi” to my dad, unpack, re-pack, and mount up my new skis, before I hit the road again to spend some time with my Brother and ski with him in summit county. I did a quick stop in Salt Lake City to see some friends and I ended up taking a day to ski at Brighton with my good friend Dex Mills. After another day in the car, I grabbed my brother in Boulder, and we headed towards the snow. I had a great time skiing in Summit County, and spending his Thanksgiving break skiing with him. Now, with ten days in, I think my feet are finally accepting that they’re going to have to be in ski boots the next 5-6 months.
Trailer Time!!!
I’ve been getting really stoked for this next season: I’ve been having skiing dreams for weeks, I just found out that I’ll be skiing with Cross Sportswear, all of this years movies are looking sick!!! In addition to the movie I’m in, TSM’s “Hippies Punx & Misfits,” Im really looking forward to: Poor Boyz’ “Revolver,” Level 1′s “Eye Trip,” TGR’s “Deeper” fetering Jeremy Jones, Matchstick’s “The Way I See It” and Powder Whore’s “Tele-Vision.” In Case you haven’t seen the trailers, I’ve included them down below, hopefully you’ll get as pumped as I am:

Okay, Now I’m Done For The Season
Yesterday my friend, North Parker, and I woke up at 5am to ski a sick couloir on Hyndamn peak. With our skis and boots strapped to our packs, we started the 5mile approach to the base of the mountain. After crossing a river in the basin we scrambled our way to a small dwindling snow field, and started our 5000ft climb. About halfway up it became too steep to continue skinning, and we started an epic boot pack. The ski down was really fun and I’d like to ski it again in the winter, but the trek back to the car left us exhausted. All in all, it was a good time on one of Idaho’s most famous peaks.
The pictures below are from my cell phone, not the best quality but pretty good:

Kjell Ellefson Comeback
My good friend and fellow telemark skier, Kjell Ellefson, put out a self edit last night. He was out of commission last season due an injury, but I think it’s safe to say that he was back this year charging harder than ever! Personally, I think that he is one of the most talented and progressive telemark skiers out there today. Please watch the video below to see what I’m talking about:

Gaper Day
The last day of the season is always Gaper Day, and with a group that reached 60+ people this Gaperday was truly epic! What is a gaper you might ask?
If you live in a ski town, you deal with them everyday. If you own a season pass, they’re destined to get in your way. And, if you only ride a few times a year, you might be among their ranks.
They’re the people in neon one-piece suits and rear-entry boots standing in the middle of the run, taking pictures of the resort. They’re the people who refuse to buy fat skis and Gor-Tex-enhanced clothing. To you they might be known as Uncle Phil and Aunt Bunny, but to most people they’re known as gapers. -Powder Mag
The Picture Gallery below describes the epic-ness i can’t quite put into words:

I’m Back In Reality But Not All The Way..
I’ve been physically back in Sun Valley for a few days now, but I think I’m mentally still in Alaska. Even today as I got ready to ski at the resort, I put on my beacon and my avy-pack with out even thinking, then I remembered, and felt like a a dork as I walked back to the condo to take them off… Then, even though the mountain was empty and the snow was awesome, the skiing felt droll, nothing felt steep or exciting… Oh well, I’ll get back into the swing of things eventually…
Here are some Pictures form the last two days of the trip:

AK 2010 Is Over, Time For Real Life
The last two days in Alaska were amazing! We had beautiful blue bird days and the snow pack stabilized, giving us a green light to ski on some steeper and more exposed slopes. I ended up finishing my Alaskan adventure skiing an awesome knife-edge ridge that seemed to go forever which left me exhausted and adrenaline filled at the bottom! Now, after a not so nice red eye flight from Anchorage to Salt Lake, and a tired drive from Utah back to Idaho, I’m finally back in Sun Valley… time for real life again.
My trip was amazing and I have a bunch of people to thank for helping me, be sure to check out all of their websites!!!
Sun Valley Resort:
Thanks for giving me a place to ski and train all winter, couldn’t have done it with out a world-class home mountain!

Sun Valley Ski Patrol:
Thank you for the financial help, I wouldn’t have been able to have this amazing experience with out help from all of you guys and girls!
Chums/Beyond Coastal Sun Care:
Thanks for all the great products that helped me keep my face from frying, and thanks for helping me out financially.
Black Diamond Equipment:
Thanks for making such awesome and reliable gear!
Thanks to Penelope’s Café for feeding me, and for supporting my skiing all winter!

Demo Day Was A Hit
Demo Days was a big hit this last Sunday (Dec 13), I was able to help/teach almost 25 people how to Telemark and we all had a great time. If you missed out on the action you can still demo all the killer gear at eaither Backwoods or The Elephants Pearch.

Skiing My Butt Off!
I just tallied up all of the hours I’ve spent skiing so far this year, and I was shocked to see that I have skied over 150 hours already!!! I got an early start on my ski season this year with a two and a half week trip to Summit County, CO. Now I’m back home in Sun Valley, I’m feeling stronger than ever, and I’m antsy for winter to show up. Snow is in forecast this weekend but Sun Valley isn’t waiting. They have put snowmaking efforts on full throttle, and new terrain is opening every few days…

Early Season Update & Video
My trip to Colorado for some early season shredding is almost at an end. So far I have skied 10 days (about 45 hours) at two resorts. Snow is in the forecast and I’m so excited for an epic winter to start!
I’ve mostly been working on switch tele-skiing, tele-nose butters, and carving on this trip check out the video:
Reacquainted With An Old Friend
I’m in the best mood EVER!!! Want to know why? …Because today was the first day of my 09-10 ski season. It felt so good to finally get reacquainted with the snow, and I am so happy to be sliding down mountains again. I forgot that I would have to get used to my equipment again, but after a few runs i was quickly charging ahead at full speed. After skiing today, I have a feeling that the rest of this season is going to be truly epic!
First Snow of the Season Revs up my Pre-season Stoke
With the skiing dreams really showing up in the last few months I have been so anxious to ski that I was thinking about driving all the way to the Breanu Sand Dunes to go sand skiing. When I awoke this morning to find snow pouring out of the clouds, I could hardly contain my excitement. I ran around the house waking up everyone, making sure that I wasn’t dreaming. After running outside and throwing some snowballs for Bailey, my dog, I went onto the Sun Valley website to check out the real time status of the snow on the mountain cams and the snow depth indicator read 9in! Update: it now reads 12inches one hour later

I hope that this fresh blanket is a tell tale sign of a big winter to come. I have a bet with some friends going on about how many inches we’re going to get here in Sun Valley. How many inches do you think we are going to get here in Sun Valley? Leave a comment on this post, and if you’re the closest at the end of the year you will win the prize!

This is also the first snow the New Gondola has experienced
